Nightlife in Brussels

Brussels after dark is democratic, unpretentious, and fueled by some of the best beer in the world -- which shapes everything about how the city goes out. The evening almost always starts with a drink at a cafe-bar, and many great nights never leave that format.

The Delirium Cafe area in the Ilot Sacré near Grand Place draws crowds for its absurd beer selection -- over 2,000 varieties -- but the real bar scene happens elsewhere. Rue du Marche au Charbon in the center is the hub of LGBTQ+ nightlife, with Le Fontainas and Chez Maman attracting a mixed and welcoming crowd most nights. The parallel streets heading toward the Bourse have dive bars and jazz cafes that fill up from 10pm onward.

Saint-Gilles and Ixelles form the main going-out corridor. The area around Parvis de Saint-Gilles has cocktail bars and natural wine spots, while Flagey attracts a slightly older crowd to its brasseries and music venues. The Café Belga on Place Flagey, occupying a beautiful art deco former radio building, is an institution for weekend drinks.

For club culture, Fuse near Rue Blaes has been the city's techno anchor for decades, regularly hosting international DJs in a stripped-back industrial space. Kiosk Radio under the arches near Botanique broadcasts live and hosts DJ sessions that are free and open to all. C12 on Rue Citerne is a newer club in a converted car park that has quickly earned a reputation for adventurous programming.

Live music is a Brussels strength. Ancienne Belgique on Boulevard Anspach is one of Europe's best mid-size venues, and the Botanique cultural center near Rogier has multiple rooms programming indie, electronic, and world music. For jazz, the Brussels Jazz Club in Grand Place and L'Archiduc -- an intimate art deco cocktail bar on Rue Antoine Dansaert that has hosted live jazz since 1937 -- are both essential.

Transport note: the metro closes around midnight, but night buses run on weekends. Brussels is compact enough that taxis between neighborhoods rarely exceed 15 euros.
