Cafes & Culture in Brussels

Brussels hides one of Europe's richest cultural scenes behind its famously unassuming exterior, and the city's cafe culture -- rooted in long afternoons with a book, a beer, and nowhere to be -- is the perfect vehicle for discovering it. This is a city that gave the world Magritte, Herge, Brel, and art nouveau, all within a few square kilometers.

The Magritte Museum on Place Royale is the essential first stop, housing the world's largest collection of the surrealist's work across three floors. Afterward, walk down through the Sablon to Wittamer or Passion Chocolat for coffee and pastries in surroundings that feel appropriately dreamlike. The nearby Royal Museums of Fine Arts connect directly and hold Flemish masters from Bruegel to Rubens.

The comic strip culture is uniquely Brussels. The Belgian Comic Strip Center on Rue des Sables is housed in a stunning Victor Horta building and traces the art form from Tintin through the Smurfs to contemporary graphic novels. Murals of famous characters cover building walls across the city -- following the official Comic Strip Route is a free walking tour that doubles as an architectural survey.

For art nouveau, the Horta Museum in Saint-Gilles is essential -- the architect's own home, preserved in extraordinary detail. The neighborhood around it is full of beautiful facades, and Saint-Gilles has some of Brussels' best cafes. Le Verschueren on Parvis de Saint-Gilles and Cafe de la Presse are both excellent for lingering.

Flagey, the art deco former radio building in Ixelles, is now a cultural center hosting classical concerts, film screenings, and exhibitions. The cafes around Place Flagey -- particularly Cafe Belga -- are perfect before or after an event. The nearby Cinematek, Belgium's film archive, screens rare and classic films daily in original language.

BOZAR on Rue Ravenstein, designed by Victor Horta, is the city's premier performing arts venue, programming everything from the Belgian National Orchestra to contemporary dance. Its Horta Hall is acoustically superb.
