Top 5 Neighborhoods for Family
Family in Brussels
Uccle in the south is the classic family neighborhood. Its streets are tree-lined and residential, the Bois de la Cambre and Foret de Soignes together provide an enormous green corridor that starts at the edge of the neighborhood and stretches deep into Walloon Brabant. Children cycle in the Bois on car-free Sundays, and the playgrounds in Parc de Wolvendael are popular year-round. Several international schools cluster in and around Uccle.
Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and Woluwe-Saint-Lambert in the east are another family magnet. The Parc de Woluwe connects to a chain of green spaces, and the neighborhoods have a suburban calm while remaining on the metro line. The area around Stockel has a pedestrian-friendly commercial square with bakeries, bookshops, and Saturday markets.
For families who prefer urban energy, Ixelles near Place Flagey offers an excellent balance. The Ixelles ponds provide a focal point, the Saturday morning market on Place du Chatelain is a neighborhood ritual, and the density of the area means schools, shops, and playgrounds are all within walking distance.
Etterbeek, near the Cinquantenaire park, is increasingly popular with young families. The park itself is enormous, with a playground, open lawns for running, and the Autoworld and military museums that older children enjoy. The neighborhood is more affordable than Uccle while being equally well connected.
Schooling in Brussels is a particular strength. The Belgian system offers Dutch-speaking, French-speaking, and European School options, plus numerous international schools. Many families raise bilingual or trilingual children as a natural consequence of living here. Weekend activities for children are abundant -- from Scientastic science museum to the natural history museum's famous dinosaur hall.
